Policy Brief Launch Event and Joint Forum: ‘What Is at Stake in the Turkish Constitutional Referendum?’

The Centre for Turkey Studies (CEFTUS) in partnership with the Foundation for Law, Justice and Society (FLJS) is pleased to invite you to a public forum with Dr Bill Kissane, a political scientist and historian, and Associate Professor in Politics at the London School of Economics on 13th April 2017.

A referendum on the proposed changes to Turkey’s constitution will take place on 16th April 2017. The changes proposed would significantly alter the structure of Turkey’s government and so the vote has big implications for Turkey’s future.

Dr Bill Kissane will present on his recently published policy briefing entitled, ‘What Is at Stake in the Turkish Constitutional Referendum?’, where he assesses the prospects for a free and fair vote on the most ambitious changes to the Turkish constitution yet seen, which was called in the aftermath of the failed military coup of 2016.

Speaker Biography

Bill Kissane is a political scientist and historian, and Associate Professor in Politics at the London School of Economics, where he is a member of the Conflict Research Group. He is the author of several books including New Beginnings: Constitutionalism and Democracy in Modern Ireland (University College Dublin Press, 2011) and Nations Torn Asunder: the Challenge of Civil War (Oxford University Press, 2016). He has held visiting positions at University College Dublin, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Bielefeld, and the National Humanities Centre in North Carolina.
